Preparation of Cultivation Land for Shrimp Seeds 03- Stages and Methods (continuation)

In the foregoing discussion has described the stages of post-harvest land management. In the following discussion will describe the next stage of preparation of cultivation land for shrimp seeds as discussed below.

B. Stages of Preparation of Cultivation for Shrimp Seeds

This stage is conducted after post-harvest land management is relatively adequate for the process of cultivation of shrimp seeds. In general this stage covers three sub-phases namely:
  1. Land preparation and its tools. This sub stage aims to provide a convenient medium for the shrimp seeds which are previously lived in different environments. While the tools necessary to support initial process of shrimp culture cycle, so there was no constraint for cultivation activities which is also affect the success of cultivation indirectly.

Activities performed within this sub phase includes are among others: (i) Test to pond construction, (ii) Channel filtering of water inlets and water outlets, (iii) Installation of water wheels.

Pond construction tests aimed to determine the level of leakage and the rate of depreciation of the waters in the pond and the smoothness of water outlet channels. The method can be used for this activity is through water input into the pond at a maximum height at a certain time period. These factors should be considered to the design and construction a pond does not cause an obstacle in the process of cultivation.

Filtering of the water inlet channels aimed at preventing the entry of predators and competitors of shrimps into the ponds, whereas filtering of the central of water outlet channels aims to prevent throwing-out of small-sized shrimps. The method can be used in this activity is through the installation of filter on pipes of water inlet channels and central of outlet channels.

The next activity at this stage is the installation of sub waterwheels. The important thing to note is that the wheel position should be able to generate water currents that can direct the dirt at pond bottom to a central of water outlets.

  2. Preparation of pond waters. These sub-stages include activities such as: (i) Entering of water with a height of 25-30 cm, (ii) Operation of water wheels to the pond waters, (iii) Addition of pond water volume, (iv) Growth of natural feeds, (v) Pond waters transparency management.

At the height of the pond water around 25-30 cm, the usual technical treatment is given a certain dose of saponin which is aims to: (a) deadly predators and competitors of shrimp which are enter into the pond, (b) assist in the formation of pond waters (as an organic fertilizer).

After saponin treatment performed then later have to be conducted water wheels to the pond waters which is aims to support process of saponins distribute evenly into the pond. Additional water activities conducted after the foam / froth generated by the saponins have been lost.

Natural food for the fry is usually in the form of zooplankton (diatomae) that can be observed visually after the sub stage lasted about 5-7 days.

The next activities in the sub stage are the water transparency management that can be done by fertilizing with urea & TSP based on the required dose. The water transparency for fry stocking should penetrate to pond bottom or not too concentrated.

  3. Fry stocking preparation. This sub stage is basically the most recent events of preparation of cultivation land for shrimp seeds after all stages considered optimal for the moving process of fry from two different environments.
Preparation of cultivation land for shrimp seeds shall take into seasonal factors and disease epidemic at that time.
