Pond Waters Transparency 03 - Indicators On Shrimps

A decision making in determining the pond waters transparency level to be applied must be based on behavior changes of shrimps through visual monitoring and observations carefully so as not to cause problems.

In practical terms, the required transparency level of the shrimps can be observed through changes in shell color / chitin from shrimp as one of its indicator because chitin has its own characteristics which are sensitive to changes in water environment, because at the time the shrimps were moulting, the chitin substance will absorb required ingredients in the formation of new shell from surrounding waters environment. Indicators that can be used to measure needs of the shrimp to pond waters transparency, are:
  1. Pond waters transparency is too high, shrimp shell is usually dull brown in color. This condition implies that the shrimps are require a lower waters transparency and if it is not anticipated immediately will cause a few problems among others, flabby shrimp body, uniformity level of shrimps in the population will vary and its can reduce shrimp populations in ponds indirectly.

  2. Pond waters transparency is too low/concentrated shrimp shell is usually paler in color than usual. This condition implies that the shrimps are require a waters transparency to be elevated / diluted and if it is not anticipated immediately will cause a few problems among others, shrimp appetite will decrease, hepatopancreas shrinking so vulnerable to disease.
Management of pond waters transparency level which have a direct correlation with the abundance of plankton is basically the management of plankton growth in ponds with abundance standards required by the shrimp and pond waters ecosystem balance.
