Shrimp Plasticity Level

Shrimp plasticity as one of an indicator of shrimp condition is a factor that very determine to shrimp culture process successfully mainly for shrimp quality that be produced, so that indirectly influential towards its sell price.

Simply, shrimp plasticity level can be interpreted as shrimp body ability (part between shell with meat) to return on at first form after pressed from outside. Shrimp plasticity also can be analogous as “fat” or “thin” condition of shrimp because this factor related with food consumption level from shrimp itself.

Practically, shrimp plasticity level can monitored by depress shrimp body using thumb and forefinger and then the pressure released. Through this method so can determined plasticity level and shrimp condition at that moment. Shrimp plasticity level in general can be grouped to 3 categories, there are:
  1. Porous, in this level the shrimp on “very thin” condition and can categorized in serious condition. In this condition, if we depress shrimp body, its felt hole between shell/skin with shrimp meat and that shell inclination is not/long return to at first form. If too many shrimp within pond has same condition, so can be said that shrimp within pond on serious condition. The condition like this if it is not handled immediately can causes decreasing shrimp population density drastically, because shrimp that porous relative susceptible towards disease besides its can stimulate cannibalism between shrimps within pond.

  2. Medium, in this level the shrimp on “thin” condition. In this condition if we depress shrimp body, its felt that shell and shrimp meat to be one but in not rubbery enough condition. If too many shrimp within pond has same condition, so can be said that shrimp within pond on medium condition.

  3. Rubbery, in this level the shrimp on “fat” condition. In this condition if we depress shrimp body, its felt that shell and shrimp meat very rubber. If too many shrimp within pond has same condition, so can be said that shrimp within pond on good condition.
As efforts to gets an ideal shrimp plasticity level, the applied feeding program is better to follow food need level from shrimp itself. Feeding program which applied too tight can causes porous shrimp. On the contrary feeding program which applied too over can causes shrimp in a “fat” condition although good for shrimp but it can cause over feeding that stimulate food residue at pond bottom and if this condition let too long, so can evoke problems for shrimp itself.

An accurate monitoring towards shrimp condition at time of food checks at anco and at routine sampling is one of an alternative activity that can be conducted to restrain shrimp plasticity level with applied feeding program (related to food conversion ratio). Based on mentioned above explanation, so the ideal condition is the shrimp on fat condition with feeding program that still under control as according to shrimp need level.
