Natural Feed for Shrimp - 02

One fundamental thing to note is natural feed in ponds is a feed source of main choice for shrimp during its availability is still insufficient for the population of shrimp in a pond. Conditions like this can be interpreted as follows: if the shrimp facing a choice between artificial feed with natural feed, then that will be chosen first is a natural feed in the waters.

Some of of natural fed benefits which can be used as a consideration matter in the feeding program management, among others:
  1. The adequate availability of natural feed primarily on early fry density can maintain a level of fry life / young shrimps in pond.

  2. The adequate availability of natural feed primarily on early fry density can produce at the uniformity level of shrimps in the population that is relatively same, or does not vary.

  3. The adequate availability of natural feed primarily on early fry density can produce a rapid growth of shrimp than usually.

  4. The adequate availability of natural feed can reduce an accumulation of dirt and mud on pond bottom, because the use of artificial feed as a largest contributor of impurities is still relatively limited.

  5. The adequate availability of natural feed can reduce production costs of the use of artificial feed so that indirectly influence the profit value will be obtained.
One parameter that can be used as a benchmark of availability level of natural feed in ponds is shrimp appearance on water surface or ancho. In pond waters with adequate or abundant of natural feed supply, the appearance of shrimp relatively slower compared with pond water with their natural feed supply is lacking. This situation occurs because the shrimps more activity in water bottom to search for needed natural feed, so rarely appeared on water surface of or ancho.

Conversely, if the appearance of the shrimp at water surface and ancho relatively more than usual conditions, it can be used as one indication that the availability of natural feed in these waters have been depleted or even completely empty. This situation occurs because the shrimp will be trying to find a feed that is rarely found in the pond bottom and usual activities of shrimp in these circumstances is to conduct convoy around the ponds, or, many appeared on pond wall.

One of other parameters that can be used as a benchmark of availability level of natural feed in the pond waters is through the shrimp fecal color observation that contained in shrimp’s intestine and that left in the ancho. Shrimp fecal derived from natural feed usually in blackish color or depends on a type of natural feed. If the result of observation indicates that most of the shrimp has a blackish color of the fecal material can be used as an indication that the level of natural food availability in these waters is still adequate.
