Shrimp Culture Management at First Month Phase 02 – Pond Water Quality

Like have been explained at discussion before, the objective of shrimp culture management at first month basically is to prepare a pond water environment which according with fry/small shrimp need. In line with the objective, hence pond water quality management also have central role to shrimp’s growth so it can preserve quality and quantity including shrimp conditions, shrimp uniform level, shrimp density/population, average body weight of shrimps, etc.

At discussion related with water quality which has been explained at former explanation, there are some parameters of water quality water which able to be used on assessing pond water quality. The parameters are:
  1. Pond Water transparency.
  2. Pond water color .
  3. Pond water physic condition .
  4. Pond bottom condition.
Shrimp requirement to pond water quality parameters like above mentioned relative differ between fries/small shrimp compared to big/adult shrimp. Besides technical treatment parameter of pond water quality management also differ between both of them. Explanation concerning pond water quality parameters at first month phase will be elaborated pursuant to growth of shrimp like explanation hereunder
  1. Early time till second week sub-phase, the fry / small shrimps require high water transparency level there is from pond bottom penetrate transparency to about 60 cm – 80 cm (or depended on level of shrimp population within pond and also height of wall of pond). At this sub-phase pond water circulation more directing to fill pond water till at selected height. The water replacement with this method is aim to preparing pond water so that easier to be formed at a time when required. Besides also to avoid brought of shrimps that still have small size at a time of throwing away of pond water.

Though at this sub-phase the pond water transparency level is relatively high, the pond water better have had a color (brownish or greenish) as indicator that pond water have owned readily plankton seed to be growth as according to pond water transparency level at selected time. Considering forming water color and pond water transparency, hence a technical treatment which able to be applied is giving fertilizer with dose not too much. At this sub-phase, water wheel not yet has been operated maximal (just for assisting the process forming of water).

At this sub-phase, the parameters of pond water physical condition and pond bottom condition relative not yet needed intensive monitoring, because there is not yet/a few artificial feed inputs (as biggest contributor to pond water physical condition and pond bottom condition. Monitoring to both of this parameters can be conducted cursorily unless if happening selected cases within pond water.

The water condition that need to take heed at sub-phase is growing of moss in the pond bottom that resulted by height of water transparency level at this sub-phase. Moss can grow because the water transparency in a bottom penetrates condition at old time relatively and it is not soon formed, so that penetration of sunshine to pond bottom will become as stimulator for growing of the moss. Otherwise could anticipate the growing of the moss, hence this condition can become the constraint for management of pond water quality at next sub-phase.

  2. Third week till fourth week sub-phase, the pond water transparency level that required by fry/small shrimp at 60 cm – 45 cm range with color of pond water is brown or green. Pond water transparency and pond water color at this sub-phase is better have directed to stability condition of water quality, because if this condition not yet reached hence it will have an effect for shrimp quality and condition so that indirectly will have an effect on program of shrimp culture management for next phase.

Pond water replacement at this sub-phase have ever been applicable is throw out-fill method. Pond water throwing out is applicable to know the pond bottom condition that is by monitoring to pond water throwing out channel at opened time to throw out pond water. Pond water replacement water with “oplos” method (water throwing out and water filling conducted concurrently) can be conducted if pond water have been assumed enough stabilize.

In order to maintain stability of pond water hence fertilizer giving can be improved by it dose (depended on pond water condition and season at that moment) and operation of water wheel can more intensified and also if needed the water wheels amount can be added. At this sub-phase, monitoring to pond water physical condition require to more intensively especially if shrimps predicted have a solid population.
The parameters and management of pond water quality at first month phase be like above explanation have to fixed relate at growth and requirement level also condition of fry/small shrimp at that moment. Besides season factor and weather is also very influence the level management of pond water quality at this phase, because pond water stability level especially at early sub-phase not yet stabilized relatively.

Pursuant to description of management of pond water quality at first month phase be like above mentioned explanation, there is a needed note to highlight, that is: ”management of pond water quality don't make we trapped at pond water culturing condition without paying attention to condition, quality also requirement level of shrimp at that moment, or equally, we have shrimp culturing not pond water culturing.”.
