Pond Water Transparency – 03 – Indicators at Shrimps

A decision making for determining the pond water transparency which to be applied have to based on change of shrimps behavior through careful visual monitoring in order to avoid some problems. Practically, the pond water transparency level which required by shrimps can be monitored through shell/chitin color changes of shrimps as one of it’s indicator because a chitin have a characteristic that is sensitive to change of pond water environment, because at shrimps moulting time of chitin will permeate materials from around environment pond water which needed to forming of new shell. The indicator which able to be used to measure shrimps requirement to pond water transparency are among others:
  1. The pond water transparency is too high, usually the shell of shrimps is lusterless brownish. This condition sign that shrimps require a lower water transparency and if it is not soon anticipated will be able to generate some problems for example flabby shrimps bodies, shrimp uniform level in population will vary and indirectly can reducing shrimps population within pond.

  2. The pond water transparency is too low/concentrated, commonly the shell of shrimps is more pale than usual. This condition sign that shrimps require a higher water transparency and if it is not soon anticipated will be able to generate some problems for example: shrimp’s appetite become reduce, hepatopanchreas decrease so that susceptible to disease.
The pond water transparency management which have the correlation directly with plankton abundance basically is a plankton growth management within pond with a standard of abundance that required by the shrimps and balance of pond water ecosystem.
