Predators and Competitors of Shrimps Within A Pond

One kind of other problems concerning the waters of the pond and there was no association with water quality problems as discussed previously is the presence of aquatic biota that are predators and competitors for shrimp as well as live and thrive in the pond.

Predators are a biota that prey on shrimps in ponds such as the type of snapper, and various species of other carnivore fishes The appearance of predators in a pond water had no significant effect relative to water quality in terms of balance and stability, but very influential on the life and population levels of shrimps in pond.

Competitors are a biota that competes with shrimp in terms of feed consumption in the pond or feed that has been given into the pond like tilapia fish, crabs and other biota types that compete to consume shrimp feed. Like the predators then the existence of these types of biota in the ponds only significant effect on shrimp feeding program that has been determined and does not affect the pond water quality.

The appearance of predators and competitors of shrimps in a pond can be caused by several factors, are among others:
  1. Fry density land preparation process is not maximal, so that predators and competitors of shrimps which are enter into a pond did not die completely.

  2. Water inlet channel without any filtering, so that predators and competitors of shrimp can enter into pond waters.

  3. Predators and competitors of shrimps enter into pond waters are still in a form of eggs or larvae although the water inlet channels already filtered
The existence of species and abundance of predators and competitors of shrimps in a pond will bring serious repercussions if the numbers are very abundant and are not immediately handled. Indication of the presence of predators and competitors of shrimps in a pond can be known through, are among others:
  1. Observations on periodic shrimp sampling, because the predators and competitors of shrimps usually will be carried along with sampling nets so that the type and estimated of its abundance in the ponds can be known.

  2. Observation and identification of predators and competitors shrimp when conducted routinely checking ancho

  3. Observation and identification of predators and competitors of shrimp directly through movement and activity of predators and competitors in a ponds.
Controlling and destruction of predators and competitors of shrimps in a pond can be conducted by using a saponin with a lethal dose for both. This activity is conducted with due regard to the conditions and quality of shrimp at that time and should not be done when the shrimp in a weakened condition or when the shrimp on mass molting condition. Provision of saponin into the pond as much as possible done during good weather and the sun is very hot and pond water high levels relatively low that balanced with intensive water wheel operation, because in these conditions the effect of saponin will be very effective and deadly to predators and competitors of shrimps. After saponin treatment, carcasses of predators and competitors in the ponds should be lifted out immediately, so as not to contaminate and rot in the pond, and hereinafter the pond water quality formed and restored so as not to affect the shrimp by means of water circulation.
